How to Vote cards

We have an election here in Victoria on Saturday and I got to thinking, well that’s a lie; I’ve always thought that it’s wrong to allow uninformed people the right to vote. After all if you do not understand what you’re voting for or the policies of party or the politicians they represent, then it becomes a popularity contest.

Here’s an example; this has gone out to every home in Victoria from both the Labour and liberal parties – at what cost to you and I?

If you do not understand how to fill out a Voting card, I’m sorry but you should forfeit your right to vote. If you do not understand the road rules, it’s doubtful that you’d get a car license or if you do not know what pi stands for, it’s unlikely that you’d get a maths degree, yet we allow uninformed people the right to vote because they are over 18!

“NO NEED TO FILL IN THIS PART”

That’s a lie, you need to fill it out to select where your preference votes go – ignoring this allows the politician to select any one they wish. Again if you do not understand what the preference vote is, should you really be voting?

Rant over!

It’s technically true – there is no need to fill that bit out if you’re happy to have the ALP direct your preferences however they want to (hello Family First!). I always fill in below the line, even if there are 70 choices, just so I can get my money’s worth.

The thing is, there are lots of people who are otherwise pretty intelligent and involved who have no idea how any of this work. It’s a worry.
